Press Release

On September 17th, 2008, Southern Maine Community Recreation Center, (SMCRC) closed on a twenty year $1,180,000.00 loan to purchase the “Yourspace” dome in Gorham, Maine.  The purchase was financed through Rick Rouillard of Kennebunk Savings Bank.  Furthermore, Alton “Swede” Wedberg of the USDA Rural Development provided a 90% bank loan guaranty and Gary Vogel, Esq. of Drummond, Woodsum & MacMahon conducted the closing.
The indoor sports and community facility was secured at auction on February 14, 2008 by a local Gorham business owner and has been operating since March 1, 2008  as YourSpace with an  all volunteer board.  YourSpace was granted non-profit 501(c)3 status this past July. The insulation project is currently underway using community contributions and a portion of the bank loan.  To date, the current contributions total about 20% of the insulation cost. There are several fundraising engines in place to continue to generate funds.  Motor Booty Affair will be playing at YourSpace on Nov. 15 to benefit the facility along with a silent auction.  Tickets are $60/couple and are on sale at YourSpace.  In addition, corporate sponsorships and business banner sales are in full force. Inquiries regarding tickets sales and sponsorship opportunities can be made at 839-6767 or visit the website at www.yourspacemaine.com.  “I think it is important to make this information public so people know we have a substantial loan with payments and that community support is important and can make a difference.” said SMCRC board member and Treasurer Tom Biegel.  Board President Adam Sturtevant added, “The numbers look good.  We have several new leagues and groups playing here along with our solid core of loyal customers who have stuck with us. We have hired a full time general manager.  In addition, we are excited at the prospect of working with Special Olympics on some integrated programs as well as hosting some of their events.  Our goal is simple: to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.”
